Travel Survey Development and Analysis

For a travel survey to be successful it must be designed and analysed in a way which allows the feedback it creates to be used in an effective and constructive manner. To achieve this there must be a clear view of why the survey is being carried out and how the results will be used to assist understanding.

The first step towards deciding upon the most appropriate package of measures for a travel plan is to obtain a complete understanding of existing travel conditions and patterns. However, to achieve this will require more than simple counts of traffic and pedestrian flows, parked cars or cycles in shelters. To properly understand how and why people travel in the way they do requires a survey of people, their existing travel habits and their attitudes toward travel.

Having established this baseline travel data it is then essential that changes and trends are identified if the travel plan is to be successfully monitored and managed on an ongoing basis. Knowing why people do or don't use certain methods of transport, and why, provides a travel plan manager with the information they need to plan future measures.
